Aurora, Colorado

So saddened by the recent news, I wrote this poem:

I read through the news and my consciousness bled.
I learned of the twelve who had perished that night,
And feeling so sad, so exceedingly sad,
I couldn’t conceive of the shock and the fright.

I’ve sighed through the stories of loss and escape;
Ironic details, heroic salvation…
My feelings can’t even begin to take shape,
I am at a loss to achieve comprehension.

This prompts to remember that life can be brief;
It’s fragile and often can seem so unfair…
Aurora, be strong at your moment of grief,
Remember the victims in mutual prayer.

Fear

Not everyone is afraid of flying, but those who are will be able to relate to this poem:

I have no wings, but planes do.
So white, but not poetic.
So straight, but not trustworthy.
Inside the capsule belly I subdue
The thoughts that seem prophetic –
A fear so grave among the skies so frothy.

As if someone proclaimed that
I won’t have more than a hundred
Pulse beatings to live to the end,
In haste to defy such a threat,
My heart must’ve frantically thundered
A thousand beats off-hand.

I have no relief for the itch of my knees.
Stiff muscles are bending my spine.
Like pieces of magnets, my bones
Are clasping as one in a desperate squeeze.
My nerves straighten up in a twine.
My thoughts are in clamorous tones.

I close my eyes and imagine the news
With letters across: “Plane Crash!”
The image of scattered debris…
My mind has sparkled and blown a fuse;
My heart has been burning to ash
In pain for those who care for me.

Flash back and envision the ruinous hit,
And watch with those panicky eyes
The metal and plastic fold up onto me.
The crumpling pit.
The harrowing cries,
Like weeps of a howling banshee.

And do feel a hit and open my eyes…
Chase after the markings and lights,
And feeling the friction – the steady runway –
Unfasten the belt from around my thighs,
As if having won tens of deadliest fights
And carried my life away.

What about you, readers? How do you feel about flying? If not the planes, than what other things give you a fright? How do you cope with it? I would appreciate any insights in your comments!

Hide and Seek

I have an adventurous cat, whose job, apparently, is to keep me in good spirits:

Hide and seek! Hide and seek!
What a tiring game!
And again and again
I have tried to refrain –
He insists every day of the week!

Well, the flat isn’t big,
So it shouldn’t take long.
So I’m playing along.
I am in. I am on.
I will even pretend not to peek.

So he goes. And I count.
Take my time. Turn around.
Tippy-toe. Make no sound;
And he thinks he will never be found!

If he covers his head,
Then he cannot be seen!
And I look and I grin:
“This is where you’ve been,
Silly kitty, come out” – I said.

What do you think could be the funniest caption for the above photo? I would love to hear your ideas! And by the way, what do your beloved pets do to keep you amused? Do share in your comments!

Nature’s Healing

We’re part of nature, but all too often, we forget about it, completely detach ourselves from it and then wonder why life is so stressful. Let’s go back to where we belong, even for a short while, even for just a brief recharge.

Without strife I’ll feel the rain;
With ease the breeze will come to me;
I’ll hear birds without strain –
The nature’s gift is rich, but free!

I’ll walk the path across the meadow
And lose my qualms along the way.
I’ll breathe my sighs and let them echo,
And let my worries go astray.

Among the pebbles in the river,
I’ll rest my tired, sleepy gaze.
The purl of water will deliver
My thoughts from stress of busy days.

I’ll stay till dusk, and when the crescent
Emits a pale pearly blue,
I will come back a convalescent
And come alive, refreshed and new.

What do you say? Do you feel refreshed by the great outdoors, or are you an incorrigible city dweller? Don’t hesitate to drop a comment!

We’ll Make It Through

Ever seen people in the harshest of circumstances, who despite all misfortunes, keep up with a cheery spirit and even have enough strength to encourage others? I have, and it makes me believe that it’s what we have inside that matters, not what affects us from outside. There are people that seem to break down at the slightest hint of  rejection, under the lowest degree of stress. On the other hand, there are those that stubbornly stay positive in the face of any failure and maltreatment. This poem is for keeping ourselves and our close ones afloat:

Thoughts are these creatures
That enter your head.
With impudent features,
They urge to be fed.

Tiny but bustling,
They delve into sense,
Constantly rustling
At peace’s expense.

Boosting displeasure,
They hype up your woes,
Sinking the measure
Of cheerless lows.

Thoughts of this kind
Are merciless beasts.
When they’re in mind,
Then misery feasts.

They’d never lighten
Your burden of stress.
Rather, they’d heighten
Unease in excess,

Lead to confusion
And pilfer your sleep…
See the intrusion!
Don’t let it go deep.

Don’t get infected
By saddening blues.
Don’t feel dejected.
Keep positive views.

Let us uphold
All the patience we need.
Raise it twofold.
Never let it recede.

We’ll make it through.
Could it be otherwise?
We’ll make it through
All the lows and the highs.

What He Wants

This is not about superficial infatuation. This is about real love.

Image

He doesn’t want to see

scarlet powder on your cheeks.

He wants to feel secretly victorious

when he sees you blush at his gaze.

Purity of feelings always excites,

because it’s unique.

He doesn’t want to kiss your lipstick.

He wants to taste your own flavor

and see how his tongue can make the color

swell on your lips.

He doesn’t want to smear mascara

off your eyes.

He wants to brush his cheeks gently

against your own soft lashes.

And he wants to see his reflection

clearly in your eyes that sparkle

not with makeup,

but with genuine interest and desire.

He doesn’t want any smelly polish

cover and hide your nails.

He wants to see your own natural pink

turn white

as you press your fingers tightly

against his arms.

And he wants your hair flow freely

And tickle his neck.

He wants it soft

and full of your scent,

not stiff with spray,

smelling like the other million girls

who bought it.

Trust me,

he wants all this

with no faking

and no substitution.

That is,

if he really does

want you

at all.

(The picture above was taken on a remote lake in Northeastern Kazakhstan. This is the kind of natural glow and genuine beauty that I would like to aspire to)

Please tell me what you think. Does this poem make you nod your head or do you completely disagree? I’d love to hear your thoughts in your comments, as they say that beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Cat Sentiment

This is my cat’s definition of a perfect day:

Image

I’ll arch my back and meow and purr
And rub against your cheek,
And you’ll caress my fluffy fur,
And we won’t need to speak.

I’m sure a lot of you, readers, have pets. What is your pet’s way of making you feel appreciated? Do tell in your comments!

Enigmatic

When your relationship is full of exciting surprises and intriguing discoveries, it will never dull.

I.

Look up at the stars above
Such is your love.
So enigmatic,
Never static.

Look at the moon in the sky
And hear me sigh.
It’s so artistic,
Yet so mystic.

CHORUS:

I will not try
To figure you out.
I’m not a spy,
I’m not a scout.

I like it just
The way it is
My love and lust
Feed on your mysteries.

II.

Creating a new surprise,
You disguise.
It’s so magnetic
And poetic!

Just as your secrets impress,
Now I make you guess.
Is it ironic
Or harmonic?

CHORUS:

I will not try
To figure you out.
I’m not a spy,
I’m not a scout.

I like it just
The way it is
My love and lust
Feed on your mysteries.

The End of Separation

When a lengthy wait comes to an end and the longed-for reunion is at hand, it brings such exhilarating joy that is worth sharing.

Away with the planes that steal our love!
Away with good-byes, ’cause we’ve had enough!
Away with the kisses and sighs on the phone!
Away with the blues that are much too known!

And back with the happy spontaneous smiles.
And back to affection in spite of the trials.
And onto the aisle with two golden rings.
And wasn’t it worth all the months and the miles?!

(The picture above was taken in New Jersey, USA. The beauty of cherry blossoms in spring represents the joy or renewal)

What do you think? Have you ever had a long-distance relationship? What kind of impact did it have on your life? I would be glad to read about it in your comments!

My Sun

The sun shines on us all and gives life to everything. Every one of us should also have an internal sun – the source of everything positive – that beams within and without to inspire ourselves and everyone around.

Image

A fortnight ago, the sun wasn’t mine.
Infused by the brine
Of mist from the ocean,
It wasn’t lethargic but offered no sign
Of tepid attention or lively devotion.

That sun was for those who suffer a bore,
For them who are left with no hope to explore,
For those with reasons to come to despair,
And those who have a mistake to deplore.

Nor was it for me when it shined last week.
Its tone was meek,
As it softened the air.
A cloud enframed its romantic mystique
And veiled the sun’s magisterial glare.

That sun was for those who try to conceal
Some intimate dreams and emotions they feel,
For those who whisper and those who flutter,
For them who are sweet on a dear ideal.

The sun of my world is the sun of today.
Its brightening ray
Will not spare a cloud.
With no hesitation it’s leading the way
Straight into the summer, vivacious and loud.

This sun is for those who share delight,
For those who smile and harbor no spite,
For them who insist on the positive mood,
And those who want their day to be bright.
